Chemistry, Life Science & Engineering Recruitment

Recently, Luke and David had the pleasure of giving a presentation on “How to Find Your Perfect Job” at the Emerging Analytical Professionals conference hosted by the Analytical Science Network. It was extremely well attended with a variety of ages and professions represented, all keen to network and share their analytical knowledge and experience. In our presentation we covered an array of topics to help candidates secure their dream job including:

- CV writing tips

- Where to find your perfect job

- Benefits of using a recruitment agency

- How to prepare for an interview

Three important questions also arose from the audience which we would like to share in the hope you can also find your perfect job!

  • Should I tailor my CV for different roles?

Yes definitely, CV’s aren’t a one size fits all! Highlight your skills and relevant experience and how that can be relevant to the role you are applying for. If you’re going for a senior role, highlight your management experience, if it’s a LC-MS role tell us which equipment you use and how often you use it, if you are going for a scientific sales role let the recruiter know when you’ve sold etc.

  • How should I dress for an interview?

Always dress smartly, this is key! There is pretty much no such thing as ‘too smart’ in an interview situation! For men; wear a suit and shirt with a tie unless stated otherwise. For women; a suit, such as shirt, jacket and trousers/skirt, or a suit dress and jacket.

  • How much should I market myself in order to get the job?

The key to interviews is never to mislead as you will get caught out! However, you need to play the interview game…

By this I mean use your relevant skills and tell the interviewers what they want to hear. If they ask you about your experience, let them know what you have done and how you can use these skills in this particular role. You need to highlight your relevant experience to them, but do not mislead them.

Most importantly, interviewers want to hear enthusiasm and flexibility! If you are a passionate scientist who is willing to learn, you will succeed - you can train people in relevant skills but you can’t train a terrible personality!
