10 ways to beat Blue Monday

as recommended by VRS recruiters.....

Today is known as Blue Monday, acknowledged as the third Monday of January because:-
- The Christmas & New Year buzz is well and truly over
- Many have broken/given up on their New Years resolutions
- The festive credit card bills start rolling in and payday still feels miles away
- It's still dark and cold and feels like the 76th of January

Oh My Days!!! It sucks, what to do?

Below are some ideas to 'beat the blues' from our team...

  1. QUICK FIX Phone Someone!.....Remember when we used phones to actually speak to one another?!
  • A 5-10min chat with a loved one or friend can do a world of wonders. Don't text, talk!
2. EAT! Yes that's right, it's January and we say eat!
  • But here's the caveat, something healthy - give yourself a natural energy boost! Avoid the highs and lows of refined sugar
  • See here for inspiration
3. Release your inner child!...go on I dare you, in fact double dare!!
  • Make the silly jokes and watch your colleagues fight the laughter with an adult groan
  • Read these Jokes for 6 year olds
  • Think back to what you enjoyed as a youngster and do it this week!
4. Meet up with Friends/Family
  • It doesn't need to be everyone or a big social thing
  • Just a quick coffee with one person will instantly lift your mood
  • Hug too, not terribly British but the facts are too good to ignore
  • HUGS are good! They release oxytocin, the happy hormone - hug facts
  • HUG TODAY!
5. Organise/clean/declutter
  • Even if it's just your desk; clearing the post-it notes or binning the notes from 2017 you think you might still need (you won't trust me, everyone now remembers Dec 2019 as if it was about 4 months ago!)
  • A sense of accomplishment will certainly put a smile on your face
  • Plus, sell your unwanted stuff #ebay!
6. Dogs! (From Ross)
  • Walk a dog - they'll love it, you'll love it
  • Don't own a dog? Check out BorrowMyDoggy
  • Allergic? More of a 'cat person'? Well even just searching images did the trick, looking at their cute-sy, wute-sy, facey wacey's!
7. Sing...like no one's listening and you're No.1!
  • Get your favourite playlist/song on, turn it up loud and belt it out!
  • Do it in the car/shower/whilst cleaning - your favourite songs are usually linked to some pretty happy memories
  • Lacking inspiration? Check out - 10 most uplifting songs according to Science
8. Exercise...Look, you knew it, this was always going to be on the list
  • It's a proven fact that exercising releases endorphins which makes us feel great!
  • There are lots of options to get your exercise kick, be it individually, with a friend or joining a team!
  • New to it? The key is baby steps, check out these simple cardio ideas
  • Set goals for added motivation & satisfaction
9. Ditch your phone (for a bit)
  • It's becoming apparent that FOMO caused by social media is having a severe impact on mental health
  • Remember a lot of what you see is just great editing
  • Switch off from work emails in the evenings and weekends
  • Do you need a digital detox
10. Book a holiday!
  • Be it a quiet weekend break, a camping trip in the UK or 2 weeks of sun, sea and sand!
  • It's always nice to have something to look forward to
  • Holiday Inspirations
Or maybe it's work that's not floating your boat any more?
